Blessed by ragtimer Eubie Blake, Trebor Tichenor plays the “real stuff.” Rags, Tichenor comments, “retain strong ties to the country”—maintaining notably midwestern and southern roots—and are characteristically endowed with folk strains “ebullient” or “ribald,” “wistful” or “bittersweet.” Tichenor’s originals include “Wine Room Rag” and “Hickory-Smoked Rag,” but this recording also features pieces from contemporaries Charles Hunter, Robert Hoffman and Percy Wenrich.
