      Description hide

A life-long resident of the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton, New York, Princess Nowedonah was a teacher, church leader, tribal historian, and preserver of Shinnecock culture. In The Enchanted Spring she explores the wonders of the Weckatuck Spring’s mysterious spells through Shinnecock stories and folk songs. Each song describes the powers of the spring, which is now part of the Elizabeth Morton Wildlife Refuge in Sag Harbor, New York. The spring inspires love in “The Story of Poggatatuck,” and healing in the story of “Tiana and the Isle of the Dead.”
