      Description hide

The Transcendent Triptych trio brings together three bandleaders, using early, classical, and folk music to recreate the concept of modern avant-garde jazz. János Ávéd, David Six, and Tilo Weber aim to discover transcendent realms beyond the material nature of music through a repertoire featuring a myriad of subtle nuances and timbres.

In the Transcendent Triptych trio, three prominent figures of European jazz use early, classical, and folk music to recreate the concept of modern avant-garde jazz. The idea for the collaboration between János Ávéd, David Six, and Tilo Weber was born in 2022 at the most important meeting point for European jazz, the Jazzahead! showcase in Bremen, after which they quietly developed their new compositions. Their repertoire, featuring a myriad of subtle nuances and timbres, aims to discover transcendent realms beyond the material nature of music, through the extension of both fixed and spontaneous musical forms. Their profound and often mystical musical world ranges from epic rubatos to Indian rhythms, from flexible meters to emphatic silences, and invokes associations engaging all the senses of the attentive listener. Their debut album features compositions developed in the spirit of true co-writing.

All three members of the trio are recognized bandleaders in their own right, which guarantees both equality among them and distinct musical visions rooted in a shared language throughout their work. Saxophonist János Ávéd broadens his musical horizons through diverse constellations; he is connected to BMC in multiple ways, including as principal saxophonist and composer for the Modern Art Orchestra, as well as a member of Gábor Gadó’s various bands, with whom he has played on multiple albums released by the label in recent years. David Six is well-versed in Indian, classical, and pop music; in addition to his solo performances, he is active as in joint programmes with Bill Frisell and Bryce Dessner, and at the helm of Dance with the Ghosts, a project uniting a wide variety of collaborators like Lukas König, András Dés, and Mona Matbou Riahi in ever-changing lineups. Drummer Tilo Weber, who was recently honored with the Deutscher Jazzpreis, channels his restless spirit of exploration in groups such as Y-Otis, the David Friedman Generations Trio, Tesserae, and Nancelot.
