A new chapter in the discography of the ITALIAN INSTABILE ORCHESTRA is in itself sufficiently intriguing news, considering the resonance that this all-Italian ensemble has always had on the international scene, if then for the first time in its long history the orchestra tackles a repertoire that is not self-produced, but linked to the great tradition of jazz history, this becomes a reason for further interest. What is more, if the object of interest of the investigation is the music of an icon like Duke Ellington, the level of curiosity rises exponentially! And so here we are faced with this Plays Ellington, a live performance recorded in Portugal in 2013, in which precisely the Instabile ventures, thanks to the work of Giancarlo Schiaffini, arranger and conductor for the occasion, with some of the Duke's immortal pages, naturally reshaped and made their own by a group that at that point in its adventure had not only abundantly matured a highly original stylistic figure, but had also acquired the ability to transform into something of its own any material that was submitted to it. From the music of Braxton to that of Cecil Taylor, from Willem Breuker to Keith Tippett, and right up to Duke Ellington. Once again the Instabile surprises with its ability, variety of solutions and freshness of approach, and delivers us a new sonic document, as unstable as it is unexpected. Up with the ITALIAN INSTABILE ORCHESTRA!

With Plays Ellington, the over thirty-year artistic activity of the ITALIAN INSTABLE ORCHESTRA, a historic project of Italian avant-garde jazz, is enriched with a new recording chapter.

The band without individual leadership, whose members are simultaneously soloists and composers, engages in this live performance recorded in Portugal in 2013, in the personal revisitation of some immortal pages by Duke Ellington, through the arranger work of Giancarlo Schiaffini acting also as also director of the orchestra for the occasion. The result is surprising and striking for the variety of solutions and freshness of the approach of all the components.

An important sound memory of which Felmay has decided to keep track.
