Five years after the release of the trio's debut CD, Spindrift's new production Trio Studies is now
being released. In these eight "studies", three of the most important musicians on the German
improvisational music scene show how exciting instant composing can sound at the highest level.
Frank Paul Schubert is known for his collaboration with musicians from the British scene such as
Paul Dunmall and John Edwards, and is one of the most renowned contemporary saxophonists -
idiosyncratic and very independent. Dieter Manderscheid is one of the most sought-after European
bassists, versatile, elegant and virtuoso. Drummer Martin Blume has worked with such renowned
musicians as Peter Brötzmann, Lol Coxhill, Peter Kowald, Melvyn Poore and Richard Teitelbaum.
Their working method integrates their unconditional listening into the constant process of further
musical development. Their exciting, interlocking ideas create a perpetual creative connection that
continues to develop from rehearsal to rehearsal and from concert to concert.
In contrast to the long epic arcs of suspense that have been the trademark of the Spindrift Trio's
productions to date, the three do not present the usual 30-minute pieces on "Trio Studies", but
instead allow a look at a more pointed, shorter and more concise way of working on this production.
Parallels can be drawn to the succinct works of the classical composer Anton Webern, who died 80
years ago under tragic circumstances. It was Webern's music that led the trio to the lyrical atonality,
motivic concentration and chamber music transparency that repeatedly characterize this new album.
They’ve created experimental works of sound-art that display a distinct proximity to New Music.
