Amparo Sánchez is one of the most representative female voices of Spain at an international level. As leader of her project AMPARANOIA, she said goodbye in 2008 with a great international tour, after 5 albums, compilations, presence in the best festivals in the world, collaborations and awards to begin her solo career soon after.
The story:
Amparo began to write a series of songs in 2006, marked by her personal situation and by a great motivation and desire for musical improvement. It was during a collaboration with her friends from Calexico on a television program in Canada when she decided to show Joey Burns those songs. He was thrilled by the artistic turn and the soul of the songs, inviting her to record at the Wavelab studio in Tucson. It was in the fall of 2007 when Amparo traveled to Arizona accompanied by the double bass player Jordi Mestres and the engineer Kaki Arkarazo. There, with the mastery of John Convertino on drums and Joey Burns on guitar, they recorded the songs in direct takes, all playing in the same large room at the same time. And so the adventure began…
In May 2009, this same team traveled to Cuba to complete the album at the historic Egrem studios in Havana, and also to present the repertoire live, with two concerts on the island.
The rest is history…
“TUCSON-HABANA” (Remastered - 15th Anniversary Edition)
In February 2025, it will be 15 years since the release of “Tucson-Habana”, the historic album that marked the beginning of Amparo Sánchez’s solo career, a career that continues today.
This work, produced by Amparo Sánchez herself, with the collaboration of John Convertino and Joey Burns (drums and guitar from Calexico), and with the participation of the great Cuban singer Omara Portuondo, has been remastered by Kaki Arkarazo.
We celebrate an intimate album, an emotional journey through three continents and very varied musical styles, with the powerful voice of the artist and producer from Alcalá.
Amparo Sánchez offers us a trip from the nostalgic desert of Tucson to the soft cadence of the Caribbean, with a romantic and personal theme, but at the same time earthly and human. Influences of the old trova, jazz, bolero, blues and son, with very careful instrumentation. Together with her powerful voice, she transmits the knowledge acquired over the years, preserving the gift of innocence and the strength of her interpretation.
Fifteen years later, we are crossing musical and emotional borders again to give this album a renewed sound, adding six unreleased songs that were not included in the original album from 2010. In addition, these songs feature the participation of international artists such as the Saharawi singer Mariam Hassan in the song with a psychedelic desert air “Sahara”, or Tiken Jah Fakoli, African reggae voice in “Mujeres sin miedo”.
“TUCSON-HABANA” (Remastered - 15th Anniversary Edition), with 20 songs, will go on sale on February 14, 2025, in digital version and in physical format on double CD.
Amparo Sánchez will celebrate the 15th anniversary of “Tucson-Habana” along with the release of her latest work, “Ritual Sonoro”, with a special tour of Europe.
As part of the celebration cycle for this album, Amparo Sánchez will collaborate with the LIPA school (Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts) in the United Kingdom at the beginning of 2025. The students of the last year will prepare the repertoire of “Tucson-Habana” and will accompany the singer on two dates in the United Kingdom and on four dates in Spain in some very special live performances.
