Gefilde lets soundscapes emerge from silence. Fine textures and distorted noises
unfold beyond the usual functions of the instruments. The combination of
acoustics and electronics creates a web of sound between experimental drift and
moments of calmness.
Taking individual sets of improvisations in the studio as a starting point, the 4
musicians Johanna Klein (saxophone and voice), Leo Engels (guitar), Nicolai
Amrehn (bass) and Jan Philipp (drums and production) manufacture the sounds
during the recording process, conscious of the potential of collaging and postproduction.
The intuitive connection between the musicians, developed through several years
of playing together, becomes particularly intimate in these recordings. In loud
passages, distorted guitar drones and abstract rhythms lay a foundation for the
voice, which surfaces as an equal texture rather than lead vocals. In moments of
silence, each element recedes into the background so that the music can develop
as a cohesive organism.
