Lucía Martínez
Drums, percussion, composition

Born in Vigo (Galicia / Spain) in 1982. At the age of 9, she started studying traditional
percussion and hurdy-gurdy at the Universidad Popular de Vigo. In 1998 she obtained
the eighth grade in orchestral percussion at the Guildhall School of Music in London. In
2006 she graduated in Classical Percussion at the Music Conservatory of Vigo.
She is part of the 2002-2004 generation of the «Escuela de Altos Estudios Musicales de
Galicia», belonging to the Real Filarmonía de Galicia. In addition to classical training,
she has focused on drums, vibraphone and jazz composition, as well as composition
and production of music for films.
She obtained her Bachelor's degree in Jazz from the School of Music and Performing
Arts in Porto-Portugal (2007). She has completed the Erasmus Program at the Helsinki-
Stadia Polytechnic Institute in vibraphone and jazz drums, 2006.
Master in Jazz at the University of the Arts, UdK, 2009, Berlin, graduating with honors.
Master in Film Music at the Universität für Film und Fernsehen Konrad Wollf in
Potsdam-Babelsberg (2015). Currently she is studying a Master in Political Philosophy
at the UNED (National University of Distance Education, Spain).
Her awards include two prizes as a vibraphonist at the "San Luiz" Festival in Lisbon in
May 2007: Best Performer and Best Group; and the DAAD award received in Germany.
Owner of a very personal language, her great international projection has led her to
visit numerous festivals around the world, presenting projects with different
formations, receiving extraordinary reviews.
She is the leader of Lucía Martínez Quartet, project with which she edited her first CD
for Karonte in January 2009, and was nominated in The Spanish Independent Music
Awards for Best Jazz Album 2009: “Soños e Delirios”. She is also the leader of Lucía
Martínez & Azulcielo Quintet, nominated in Independent Music Awards for Best Artist
and Best Jazz Album 2012. Both groups perform her own compositions.
In May 2014, Lucia Martínez Quartet released her album: "De viento y de Sal" with
Karonte, also nominated as best jazz album at the Independent Music Awards.
In 2015, along with Mario Burbano and Hebert Cruz, they launched the Pasoancho
Project, with which they released “Desalambrado”, a duo album by Lucía Martínez &
Agustí Fernández, which is receiving extraordinary reviews internationally. With
Pasoancho they also perform in artists' workshops - such as the last one held in
Francisco Leiro's workshop-, and design visual and sonic installations.
In Spain she participates in different projects as a vibraphonist, percussionist or
drummer as in the Projecto Miño led by the double-bass player Baldo Martínez, the
Trio MBM (Baldo Martínez, Antonio Bravo, Lucía Martínez) and Josetxo Goia-Aribe:
Hispania Fantastic.
In the German capital, Lucia composes music for films, writes for Big Bands and plays
with renowned musicians such as Alexander von Schlippenbach, Conny Bauer and
Christopher Dell. In Berlin she also belongs to the Free-Jazz Lighting Jungle Junkies and
The Levitation Trio, the Sebastian Liedke Trio, the Composers' Orchestra Berlin, and
Shotgun Chamber Trio.
She is also a free improviser and is involved in different free jazz projects as well as
solo concerts and concerts with artists from other disciplines.
She has recorded dozens of albums in the field of jazz and world music. She has also
composed music for projects such as Canto das Illas. In these days her personal
language, has brought her closer to the audiovisual world, having the opportunity to
make the music for numerous documentary projects, fiction shorts and animation
shorts.
Her current project is The Fearless with Kalle Kalima and Marcel Kroemker, performing
compositions by Lucia Martinez.
