RagaMusicis not mere entertainment. According to Indian tradition, Ragas have the power to »colourthe mind«. There are hundreds of Ragas known today, and each one of them has its own unique and distinctive emotional quality or »colour«, often associated with a certain time of day, a season or a deity. When the mind is fully »coloured« with the pure and refined emotion of the Raga, it drops its constant involvment in and identification with mundane activities. The true experience of the specific quality of any Raga is supposed to deeply transform the mind, opening it to a state of pure bliss. Even a small glimpse of this bliss can have a strong soothing, harmonising and healing effect. Therefore Raga music is often used for meditation, music therapy and Nada Yoga, the yoga of sound.
