FLAMENCOJAZZ COMPANY releases their third record in barely three years. After their veryflamenco
debut “NIKELA” and the follow-up flamenco jazz rendition to national and foreign classical
standards – from Chueca to Rachmaninoff – on “In a classical mood”, here they come again with
“RUMBO DESCONOCIDO” (“Unknown direction”).
As its name suggests, this is a record of search and, certainly, of finding, a record of continuous discovery
through a musical proposal that is becoming more solid at every turn.
“RUMBO DESCONOCIDO” unfolds a wide variety of sounds with just the same harmonic idea and
melodic and rhythmical development.
FLAMENCOJAZZ COMPANY is composed of a jazz trio, more precisely, a flamenco-jazz trio, lead by
pianist and author of most of FJC repertoire, PEDRO OJESTO, the double-bass player JOSÉ MIGUEL
GARZÓN and Cuban drummer and percussionist FERNANDO JAVIER. They are jazzmen of flamenco
soul, accompanied by guitarist JONI JIMÉNEZ and singer ISRAEL FERNÁNDEZ.
Just listen to Jiménez’s guitar ‘solo’ after Ojesto’s one on “Somos esa luz”. Or just get closed to Israel’s
voice on “Me enamoro fácilmente” (“I fall in love too easily”), that is flamenco of course, but this guy is
singing jazz as well. There is no copy and paste or mere forced fusion; it is just the development that
every musician has embraced in their own musical speech.
The album starts off with bulerías highlighted by clapping, Fender piano and guest artist Segundo
Mijares on EWI (Electric wind instrument) or midi sax, as stated on the album credits, to be followed by
one bolero where the variety of Israel’s vocal registers can be appreciated; to continue with a cover of
Pablo Milanés’ “Mandela” in the mood of tangos with special guest Juan Parrilla on flute. And more
tangos on the song that provides title to the album, with a modern jazz treatment. A romance played by
voice and guitar will end up into a 7/8, a jazz beat that FJC make it sound very flamenco.
The jazz style continues with “Recuerdo a Mariano” featuring Jorge Pardo on soprano sax, a personal FJC
homage to one of the most beloved managers in Madrid jazz scene, Mariano Gutiérrez.
The album ends up with the voice of Miguel Montero and the guitar of David Cerreruela, former
member of FJC on previous works who recently settled down in Barcelona.
“Very few bands – quotes Pedro Ojesto- can play one week at Café Central and then at Casa Patas the
week after with nearly the same repertoire. We just do”. This is the music that sounds in the jazz and
flamenco temples of Madrid. Now you have it home.
