Complicated polyphonic constructions, hard-to-understand
harmony, an incredibly forceful sound and a
nearly impenetrable, grating surface – these are some
of the common clichés about Reger’s organ music.
But this CD presents a completely different side of
Reger. Meditative soundscapes, enjoyable melodic
arrangements as well as rich sonorities – Harald Feller
has selected works by Reger for Advent and Christmas
that also reveal something about the composer’s
practice as an organist. The instrument that Feller
plays here could not be more closely connected with
Reger: it is the Max Reger Commemorative Organ
in the church of St. Michael in Reger’s home city
of Weiden, Germany. This organ, oriented to the
German Romantic style, was built in 2007 by the
Weimbs organ builders especially for performance of
Max Reger’s works.
