      Mit der Auflösung der klassischen 70er King Crimson Besetzung zog sich Robert Fripp Mitte der 70er Jahre nach und nach von der Öffentlichkeit zurück und tauchte als Gitarrist bei Alben von Peter Gabriel und David Bowie, sowie als Produzent von The Roches, Peter Gabriel und Daryl Hall auf. Er nahm ausserdem sein angesehenes Solodebüt "Exposure" auf und entwickelte das Frippertronics Gitarren-System. 1981 begann er eine neue Band mit Bill Bruford, Tony Levin und dem Gitarristen und Sänger Adrian Belew. Die Band, die sich zu Anfang "Discipline" nannte, wurde schnell die 1980er Wiedergeburt von King Crimson und "Discipline" war das erste Studioalbum aus dem Jahr 1981.
