      Description hide

The man is a legend. Dr Will, with his powerful voice, buffalo-tooth necklace and feathered top hat, could have stepped straight out of a Tarantino film. But the chap is the real deal – an entertainer and a gentleman. A miracle doctor who wanders between heaven and hell.

Yet this stage performer never loses sight of the high quality of his music: His albums ‘I Want My Money Back’ (2020) and ‘Cuffs Off’ (2015) both made it onto the German Record Critics’ charts, whilst ‘Soiree Macabre’ (2023) was nominated for the German Record Critics’ Award. Dr Will is an outstanding composer, lyricist and producer. Blues & Roots is in his DNA.

For his tenth full-length album, Dr Will invited his band, The Wizards, to the renowned Downhill Studio in Munich. There, they recorded 13 selected blues classics in two days.

The tracks for “One For The Road” were recorded entirely live, capturing the raw energy and authenticity that have always defined this genre. Without any studio tricks, the album impresses with its immediate, honest sound and the palpable chemistry between the musicians.

The band skilfully blends tradition with originality. Some tracks follow the original versions closely, preserving their timeless character. Other tracks have been deliberately reimagined and given fresh arrangements.

For example, ‘Baby What You Want Me To Do’ retains its classic form and pays homage to the original style, whilst ‘Let’s Work Together’ surprises with an original Cajun version. This blend of fidelity to the source material and creative freedom lends the album a special dynamism and makes it equally exciting for purists and curious music lovers alike.

With “One For The Road”, DR. WILL & THE WIZARDS impressively demonstrate just how vibrant and adaptable the blues still is today – direct, unadulterated and full of passion.
