      Description hide

Evi Filippou and Robert Lucaciu shed new light on the folk, jazz, and classical tradition through their own compositions, improvisations, and pieces by contemporary and jazz composers. The vibraphone & double bass duo’s first album, Love at Last Sight, can be seen as a musical autobiography, enhanced by the production work of Hayden Chisholm.

Representing the forefront of the new generation of European jazz, Evi Filippou and Robert Lucaciu formed their duo three years ago, performing their own compositions, improvisations, and pieces by contemporary and jazz composers to shed new light on the folk, jazz, and classical music tradition. Their first album Love at Last Sight is the musical autobiography of this collaboration: it summarizes the history of their workshop, from songs refined from the very first rehearsals to pieces completed just a few months before recording. Performing the roles of rhythm section, bass, melody and harmony instruments, soloist and accompanist with just two people, Filippou and Lucaciu do not rely solely on the vibraphone and double bass, but also sometimes complement the parts with their singing and various small percussion instruments. The album features guest saxophonist Hayden Chisholm, who also contributed to the album as a music producer.

Filippou, who was born in Greece, and Lucaciu, who is partly of Romanian descent, currently live in Germany, where their instrumental skills and playing style have earned them a place among the most sought-after musicians on the European scene. In 2023, the vibraphonist won the German Jazz Award for Debut Album of the Year with her sextet inEvitable (of which Lucaciu is also a member). During her career, she has worked with musicians such as Elias Stemeseder, Uli Kempendorff, Angelika Niescier and the Andromeda Megaexpress Orchestra, and has also participated in contemporary theater productions. Robert Lucaciu is a member of several international bands, for instance, he has been invited to join Thérapie de Couple, a sextet led by French-German saxophonist Daniel Erdmann, and Garden of Silences, the European quartet led by French violinist Clément Janinet – the new album of these two groups will also be released this year by BMC Records.
