The princess of Bantu Afro-pop Pamela Badjogo returns with a new album with prestigious guests including Pat Thomas and Kelly Khumalo. After a tour around the world with her previous opus, the winner of the 2022 music prize unveils a new album soberly entitled "YIEH" as a way of letting go in her mother tongue Bakaningui, then in the ancestral rhythmic traditions of her country and West Africa (where she spent more than 10 years as a backing singer for Salif Keita, Rokia Traoré, Oumou Sangaré). In this album, Bwiti, Pygmy, and Mandingo sounds blend with the worlds of new-highlife and current Afrobeats, these Nigerian and Ghanaian styles in full swing throughout the African continent and on the planet. The orchestration is meticulous, punctuated by captivating guitar licks. Careful arrangements that she owes to the artistic director of her records, the highlife specialist guitarist Kwame Yeboah (music producer and arranger of Pat Thomas and Ebo Taylor). Aron Ottignon (Pianist and arranger of Stromae on the title Papaoutai) and Élisée Sangaré are her long-time musicians. This resolutely danceable album echoes the lively evenings of Accra or Libreville but is no less devoid of meaning. The singer with her soft voice with deep accents takes us once again on a deep and introspective musical journey through which she explores the personal dramas, triumphs, and daily challenges encountered by an African woman of our time, while celebrating the soul of her cultural heritage.
