SONAKAY
Sonakay debuted with their first line-up in 2009 with their performance at the Altxerri Jazz
Gallery in Donostia-San Sebastian, as part of the International Day of the Gypsy People. It is a
band with strong Basque and gypsy roots, specialized in the fusion of both musical cultures:
flamenco and Basque. They consider themselves as heirs of the spirit of Basque singersongwriters
like Benito Lertxundi or Mikel Laboa or of flamenco stars like Camarón or Paco de
Lucía. All its members have had previous professional experiences as members of different
bands.
Their original project led them to participate in the well-known Mediaset Got Talent Spain TV
Show in 2018. A date in which they managed to get both the public and the jury on their feet,
thanks, among other things, to their successful version of "Txoria txori" by Mikel Laboa. Among
the more than 40,000 people who participated in the casting, Sonakay managed to place itself
among the top 10 finalists of the talent show.
Ever since, Sonakay has not stopped offering concerts and participating in important events.
They usually use their current formation or a bigger one that incorporates dance and
Txalaparta.
SONAKAY GUZTIEKIN
Sonakay presented its single, "Izarrak" in 2019. The song, composed together with Iker
Lauroba, is the first song of the Basque flamenco group in Euskera, the language with which
they have achieved their greatest success in performing well-known versions of Basque
musical history. The Basque singer-songwriter Iker Lauroba defines the song he has written for
Sonakay as “Half time flamenco singing with nostalgia to the hope of a small halo of light “.
In February 2020 Sonakay returned with "Rumba Txikitita"... A fresh song that invites us to
dance and gives us back the essence of Sonakay, 'flamenquito sung in euskera', but this time as
a 'rumba', with Latin airs and in the company of Cuban Omar González.
Then came 'Oye, Esta No Es Manera de Decir Adiós', a song by Leonard Cohen, in which the
voices of Yoni Camacho and María Berasarte intertwine, accompanied by the characteristic
sound of Sonakay, which gives this track a singular flamenco air, enveloped by the elegance of
Iñaki Salvador's piano.
A month later Sonakay returned from the hand of Ketama with a single that was a before and
after in the career of Basque flamenco, 'Se Dejaba Llevar por Ti', a theme of Antonio Vega that
both groups have taken to their field, presenting a bilingual version sung by Yoni Camacho and
Antonio Carmona, and has thousands of reproductions on platforms such as Spotify, Amazon
Music, Apple Music or Youtube.
Four singles that are now part of 'Sonakay Guztiekin': the confirmation that success does not
understand limitations. In the heat of the de-escalation of the State of Alarm of Covid-19,
Sonakay has resurfaced like a Phoenix, ready to challenge the cultural parade and resume its
path, taking that first step on the stage of the Garden of the Convent of Donostia to present
their new album.
The title of this latest album is no less than the reflection of what we find in this album, a work
of friendship and art that unites Sonakay with no less than 14 great artists who collaborate on
8 of the 11 tracks that make up this special project.
Ketama, María Berasarte, Iñaki Salvador, Iker Lauroba, Urko, Golden Apple Quartet, Omar
González, José de Pasaia and Paco Suárez are the reason why this album is 'Sonakay
Guztiekin'; an unforgettable experience for Sonakay, which according to its singer, Yoni
Camacho, "being able to record with this cast of stars has been a gift of life".
