This is a single that will be released on November 19 on Barrackas Records. It is called ‘Angus Macaskill’. A star from the past that shines on even in our days...

“In 2018, when I was in Scotland on one of my stays there, I came into contact with a woman who, after she understood my passion for Scotland's culture and history, lent me some of her father's correspondence from when he was in a German prisoner of war camp for almost the entire second world war. The correspondence between her father Angus and his loved ones back home on the Isle of Skye is indeed fascinating. He was a volunteer tail gunfighter during a mission over the Faroe Islands when his plane was attacked and shot down by a German fighter. He was the only survivor of the crew of a Wellington plane. He managed to parachute out of the plane in pitch darkness across the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of the Faroe Islands. However, he was badly shot and got two bullets in his body, one in the shoulder and one in the back. Incredible luck and chance ensured his survival, and he was put in a Stalag camp where he was distraught by how people gave up during hardship. Instead of despairing he instead began teaching his fellow men from Scotland the traditional Gaelic language and Gaelic songs.

This is what really moves me; the way he creates a link between these shells of men by reconnecting them to their roots, roots that many of them didn't even know they had. Many of his fellow countrymen in the Stalag camp did not know Gaelic, and he stepped in and within them he created reassurance that they indeed were going home and also a connection to what they were going back to. He finished his letters home with "Cheer up and Cheerio" and that phrase got to be the chorus of this song, simply called ‘Angus Macaskill’. If Angus had been still alive, 2020 would make his 100th birthday. This is my “Happy 100th!” birthday present for Angus Macaskill. We need heroes and ideals and in this crazy world we need people like Angus Macaskill. It was his passion for both his language and the songs of his country that ultimately saved many men. Today, when culture is the last priority, we need many heroes such as him. The song about Angus Macaskill is to this day the most important song I have written.
