Sonakay debuted with its first formation in 2009 with a performance at the Altxerri Jazz Gallery
in Donostia-San Sebastián, as part of the International Day of the Gypsy People. The group is
composed of musicians with great experience in other groups
In 2015, after a long journey, the Euskaldun group with strong Basque and Gypsy roots began
to make versions of authentic jewels of the history of Basque music, thus merging their two
cultures: flamenco and Euskera.
Jonatan Camacho "Jony" (vocals), David Escudero (first guitar), Ramón Velez (second guitar),
José Luis Jiménez (bass) and David Bernárdez (percussion), are the current members of this
group from San Sebastian whose original project led them to participate recently in the wellknown
program of Mediaset Got Talent Spain 2018. A talent show in which they had the crowd
and the jury on their feet, due -among others- to their successful version of "Txoria txori" by
Mikel Laboa. Among the more than 40,000 people who participated in the casting, Sonakay
managed to be among the top 10 finalists of the talent show.
Since then, Sonakay has not stopped offering concerts and participating in important events.
They usually do it in their current formation or with a larger one in which they incorporate the
dance and the Txalaparta. This year - at the request of the City Council of Donosti (San
Sebastián) - they have opened the festivities of the Semana Grande by singing the popular
"Artillero"
DENONTZAT This first SONAKAY album has been recorded entirely in the AME studios of
Mutriku (Guipuzcoa) and includes a total of seven songs. Among them, four versions in
Euskera: "Loretxoa" by Benito Lertxundi, "Lehenengo Ikasgaia" by Urko, "Denborareki" by Pier
Paul Berzaitz and "Txoria Txori" by Mikel Laboa. The rest are Sonakay's own compositions.
The legend says that in ancient times gypsies were birds. With this CD design and the robin,
they also mean to pay homage to the theme of Mikel Laboa «Txoria Txori» (Bird, little bird)
with which they have achieved their greatest success. The roots that emerge from its paws
represent the 2 cultures that the group strongly combines: the flamenco and the Basque.
And with daring, curiosity, simplicity, sociability and elegance, SONAKAY brings us this present.
DENONTZAT (for everyone)
