One of the most important musicians in the Spanish and international jazz scene, Perico
Sambeat, is back with a new album entitled “Voces” (Voices) where the Valencia-born sax
player is backed by his regular Big Band and some very special guests such as vocalists Silvia
Pérez Cruz and Viktorija Pilatovic.
“Voces” displays once again the enormous creative power of this musician on eight self-penned
compositions where some of the most brilliant jazz musicians and friends, members of this
amazing big band, contribute with their solo instruments and personal styles to make of this
album an absolute must for any kind of jazz aficionado.
The return of Valencia-born saxophonist Perico Sambeat to Big Band format is excellent news!! His
former Flamenco Big Band is still present and successfully touring throughout Europe, apart from tributes
to the sacred music of Duke Ellington and the one performed in Valencia dedicated to Charles Mingus’
classic The Black Saint and Sinner Lady have done nothing but demonstrate the continuing interest of
Perico Sambeat in the most spectacular jazz line-up: the big band.
Far from flamenco colours and rhythmical swings, “Voces” (‘Voices’) presents a well thought-out and
deep jazz that explores the possibilities of an orchestra. Perico is accompanied by a group of trusted
musicians and two of the most interesting vocalists of the moment (Silvia Pérez Cruz and Viktorija
Pilatovic), to make these new compositions shine with their own light. In addition to the pieces written just
for the album, Sambeat also recovers and gives new life to some of his early compositions such as
“Matilda” that now sounds in all its splendour.
Perico Sambeat drives this ship with a great crew, a great jazz band that ensures the success of the trip
and the enjoyment of all jazz aficionados, music lovers in general and people willing to dive into the
pleasure of music in capital letters.
