      Description hide

In the scope of the recent changes in the flamenco scene, Myrddin is quite an excentric genius.? He grew up in a family of artists and musicians, in a lively house with an unhealthy amount of instruments available.? Art wasn’t luxury or entertainment, it was the beating heart, the norm.

At the tender age of eleven his father tought him how to play the clarinet in jazz and gipsyswingstyle; he became part of the familyorchestra and had his first experiences on stage.? A classical melody composed on the guitar made him ask his father to teach him the basics of flamencoguitar. Quite soon after that Myrddin seemed ready for the real thing and went to Andalucia to learn from Manolo Sanlucar and Gerardo Núñez. It stimulated him to compose in his own unique language rooted deeply in the pure flamencotradition but enriched by an unlimited creativity. He fully masters the compas of the flamenco, which gives him the freedom to converse with elements of jazz or classical music. After 4 CDs and numerous concerts Myrddin is undoubtedly the (flamenco) guitarist of the Low Countries.

Myrddin doesn’t make CDs every year. His music is too rich, too distilled to be written over night. It is the result of hard work and deep digging into his own soul. 30 seconds of his music could easily give birth to 10 new pieces of music, if you would want. He knows how to give the right value and intensity to every note he plays.  On Rosa de Papel, his fourth album, he pulls out all the stops, lacing flamenco of the highest quality with a generous shot of jazz. Not only has Myrddin developed a distinctive style in his virtuoso guitar-playing over the years, he has also done so in his own compositions.

For this fourth CD Myrddin wrote a lot of music. The best of it can be found on Rosa de Papel. There is a touching solo piece and an incredible virtuoso duet with Spanish maestro Niño de Pura. Some compositions have been injected with jazz, or better latin-jazz thanks to the collaboration with Alain Pérez, former bass player of the late Paco de Lucia. In Jef Neve he found a kindred spirit in the freedom of expression and liberty in style.

An amazing singer, La Susi, sings a text by Federico Garcia Lorca, she stems from the most pure flamenco scenes of Spain and worked with Camaron de la Isla, Paco de Lucía and Tomatito! Father Koen De Cauter sings a song by Flemish writer Guido Gezelle in his unique style. American-Italian Michael Campagna plays the flute and the Adolphe Saxophone and has a unique and honest sound.

Alicia Carrasco sings Lorca on Aire de Nocturno, a classic in the making. Last but not least Manu Masaedo is a beast and a futurist on his percussions. The record is as versatile and balanced as is the personality of Myrddin: sensitive and moving; passionate and explosive; attractive and addictive.
