Johannes Brahms
Symphony No. 1, c Minor, op. 68
Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern
Stanislaw Skrowaczewski
The First Symphony of Johannes Brahms, created with
great effort and in spite of doubts and scruples, is
still appended with Hans von Bülow‘s bon mot
„Beethoven‘s Tenth.“ Despite all obvious references
to Beethoven‘s symphonic oeuvre, this is, of course, a
misunderstanding. Brahms himself stated that if one
were to write a symphony after Beethoven, it would
have to look „completely different.“
On the present recording of February 2011, the
Principal Guest Conductor of the German Radio
Philharmonic Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, Stanislaw
Skrowaczewski, shows us that the symphony does
not look „different“ but, above all, like Johannes
Brahms.
The 87-year-old, world-renowned Maestro has
been closely associated with Saarland Radio and its
musicians for decades. He will take the Orchestra
on tour in the autumn with stations in China and
Japan.
