When Mojarra Eléctrica, directed by Jacobo Vélez, musician, started in
2001 the intention was to re s e a rch and disseminate the roots of
A f roColombian music and to recover its ancient rhythms integrating them
with urban music elements from currents such as jazz, funk, rock, Cuban
timba and rap. In RAZA, the second re c o rding of Mojarra Eléctrica, the
band takes another firm stride towards the creation of a new genre. From
the initial jams at Calle 19 in downtown Bogotá to date, the band has
attracted a varied milieu of ardent enthusiasts, from professional musicians
trained in the academic school to born singers raised in the meeting point
of folklore.
Mojarra has embarked in a search for a solid and creative sound that
encompasses the richness and flavor of the AfroAmerican folklore tradition
and the versatility and possibilities of everything urban. The format includes
tradi tional instruments such as the alegre and the mar imba; modern
instrumentation is based in drum set sounds, electric guitar and bass.
Mojarra Eléctrica p roduces a sound that is the sublimation of the adaptation
of African traditions to life in Colombia, Antilles and North America, not a
tamed folklore revival but a new vital sound that is too vibrant and alive to
be captured by a name.
